To Gluten or Not to Gluten

So, the latest craze in the health/diet world is the gluten-free diet.  But what is it, why are so many people on it and should we be on it too?

Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye.  However, it is added to a number of foods, from soy sauce to condiments to processed meats. Those who suffer from celiac disease need to avoid gluten, which causes them inflammation in the small intestine and can lead to cancer and other complications.  However, many of the newfound gluten-free followers do not suffer from celiac disease. A number of them have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance after suffering from symptoms like chronic migraines, stomach cramps, eczema and fatigue.

Because testing and awareness of celiac disease and gluten insensitivity has become more widespread, the gluten-free diet has become more popular. Many have opted for a gluten-free lifestyle because it is said to increase energy, decrease bloat, eliminate migraines and help with weight loss.

But experts warn against going gluten-free if you haven’t been diagnosed with celiac disease of gluten sensitivity. Because gluten is found in a number of foods, the diet can become extremely restrictive, leading to deficiencies in certain vitamins and nutrients.
